# G.711
> ITU-T standard audio codec providing toll-quality voice at 64 kbps

G.711 is the foundational VoIP codec delivering uncompressed toll-quality audio at 64 kbps.

## What is G.711?
G.711 is an ITU-T standard audio [codec](/voip-glossary/codec/) that encodes voice at 64 kbps using Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). It comes in two variants: μ-law (used in North America and Japan) and A-law (used in Europe and most other regions).

## Pros and cons
G.711 provides excellent audio quality because it doesn't compress the voice signal. However, it consumes more bandwidth than compressed codecs like [G.729](/voip-glossary/g729/). It's ideal for LAN-based calls or when bandwidth is plentiful.
