# G.729
> Compressed audio codec that delivers good voice quality at just 8 kbps

G.729 is a bandwidth-efficient VoIP codec that compresses voice to 8 kbps with good quality.

## What is G.729?
G.729 is an ITU-T compressed audio [codec](/voip-glossary/codec/) that encodes voice at 8 kbps using Conjugate-Structure Algebraic-Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CS-ACELP). It's widely used in VoIP systems where bandwidth conservation is a priority.

## When to use G.729
G.729 is ideal for WAN links, mobile networks, and scenarios where bandwidth is limited. The trade-off is slightly lower audio fidelity compared to [G.711](/voip-glossary/g711/), though most users find the quality acceptable for voice calls.
