G.711

ITU-T standard audio codec providing toll-quality voice at 64 kbps

What is G.711?

G.711 is an ITU-T standard audio codec that encodes voice at 64 kbps using Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). It comes in two variants: μ-law (used in North America and Japan) and A-law (used in Europe and most other regions).

Pros and cons

G.711 provides excellent audio quality because it doesn't compress the voice signal. However, it consumes more bandwidth than compressed codecs like G.729. It's ideal for LAN-based calls or when bandwidth is plentiful.
