G.729

Compressed audio codec that delivers good voice quality at just 8 kbps

What is G.729?

G.729 is an ITU-T compressed audio codec that encodes voice at 8 kbps using Conjugate-Structure Algebraic-Code-Excited Linear Prediction (CS-ACELP). It's widely used in VoIP systems where bandwidth conservation is a priority.

When to use G.729

G.729 is ideal for WAN links, mobile networks, and scenarios where bandwidth is limited. The trade-off is slightly lower audio fidelity compared to G.711, though most users find the quality acceptable for voice calls.
